Jesus invited people to learn from him and to follow him in life. There was so much to learn about Jesus as he revealed himself. In the Gospel of John, Jesus made many striking statements about himself. He said he was the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, and the Way, Truth, & Life.
Jesus was not just a man or a moral teacher, but he revealed himself to be the very Son of God. He came to save the world and give his followers abundant life.
This brochure includes a day by day plan for reading through the New Testament in 2012. This year we begin in the Gospel of John. Jesus is revealed as the “The Word” (or the very expression of God).
In February, we read the Book of Acts and learn about Jesus’ followers as the church is started. The Book of Acts gives a great opening to the Epistles (or letters) in the New Testament. The last three months of 2012, we will reflect on the remaining gospels: Matthew, Mark and Luke. These Gospels help us to better know Jesus.
Jesus often took time to find a quiet place where he prayed to God the Father. His life is an example for us.
Just as bread is needed for daily survival in life, the Bible says: Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. - Matthew 4:4
Followers of Jesus grow in their faith by reading the Word of God each day, praying and seeking to put the words of Jesus in practice in life. Psalm 1 tells of one who delights in the Word of God –the picture is of a tree planted by streams of water bearing its fruit in season.
The Year 2012 Reading The Word Together has been designed to give a daily plan for reading, meditation and memorization of Scripture. As an added bonus, it allows us to do this together as a church family. We ask that you prayerfully consider being a part of “Reading the Word Together in 2012.” We challenge you to read through the whole New Testament this year!
Love in Christ,
The Elders
