Sleeping Bags for Jesus
Who says you have to be a grown-up to show Jesus' love? Our very own grade school kids Brayden and Spencer have been caring for the needs of Portland's homeless since 2008!
It all started when they went every week to help with Bridgetown Ministries downtown that feeds and cares for the physical needs of homeless people. At first they decided to bring candy to handout, which people were very excited about. After helping wash feet one night, the boys asked their Mom where the people they helped slept each night. After finding out that they had no home or place to sleep, the boys wanted to figure out a way to help. Discovering that building homes would be too expensive, Brayden and Spencer decided to buy sleeping bags instead!
That night, Brayden and Spencer pooled their savings together, and only had enough money for one sleeping bag. So they decided to knock on doors and get the church involved in helping. In 2008 and 2009, the boys were able to give away a total of 46 sleeping bags! They also were able to give away other necessities like gloves, hats and socks. The following year, they were featured in Focus on the Family's Club Jr. Magazine!
The boys continue to raise money for sleeping bags. You may even consider helping them bless our homeless people in this way! As Brayden said, "Most homeless people don't have anything. It makes us really happy when we do a lot for them."
